    Default Notebooks and connection to P3

    Have a quick question for you guru's.
    Lost my laptop during the Turkey day dinner and need to replace it. Was thinking about buying a Toshiba notebook and was wondering if I can use it to connect via RS 232 cable to Profilux?
    Any one have any ideas if it works?
    Any input will be GREATLY appreciated.

    Yes I know I was not very specific.
    The toshiba notebook is the mini net book model nb 505
    It has a plug that appears to be a rs232 but I am not sure.
    Can anyone give their opinions on it?

    It has:
    * RGB (monitor) output (15 pins)
    * 3 USB ports
    * 1 RJ45 port
    but not a RS232 port

    No. RS232 is male and has 9 pins. The one you see is female with 15 pins -> it´s a VGA analog video port

    In general I would´t use a netbook at the moment due the screen size is too small for PLC. Any cheap notebook with min. 1024x768 screen resolution & a good USB<>RS232 converter (FTDI or PROFILIC chipset) should do the job.

    Anyway, if you want to have a notebook with build-in RS232, it will be more difficult. Actual none of the netbooks I know has this port and only Toshiba still build new notebooks with it. For example the Toshiba Tecra A11-182 (PTSE0E-0LP046GR) has one (cheapest of a series I found), most Tecra A11 and S11 should have the port.

    Better way may to "shoot" an used one in the bay ... two or three year old business notebooks are sold there for very low prices - search one with the port and it will do the job for years.
