Default Can opto level sensor work underwater?

I want to cut the return pump if water level drops beyond a point of water level.
I know that I can use a floater for this but I have a opto level sensor spare.

So, can opto level sensor be always underwater and when water level drops and opto level is on the air to cut the pump?

I mean if it is ok for the sensor ro be placed continiously underwater in salt water aquarium.

    Many Thanks.

Which optical sensor do you have? The newer version is in fact placed in the water (horizontal along the water's surface). I'd wait for someone at GHL to confirm but it should work as long as the cable to sensor connection is secure.

With a little bit cogitation you can find the answer for yourself:

How would an automatic water change (AWC) be possible if not all the usable niveau sensors are submergible ( (only exception are the contactless ones, which are mounted outside)

I trust my optical submerged more than my float. Nothing to stick. I have a very active sump(sponges, macro, featerduster). All things that would make a float stick. No problems with that on an optical.
