What puzzles me, why would they award the older PL II plus
and not the newer PL3?

I had the same question
The P3 has been out cose to a year now and it's the newwer product...

because they wanted to award a price to a product which has been proved to be reliable - and PII is now for 4 years on the market
I guess we get the price for the P3 in 2-3 years ...

Very strange indeed.
All awards, I am aware of, are for the current product, be it cars, hardware, software, design or else…
Zoo Zajac in this case seems to be either a little slow or else they plan to specialize in »oldtimer« : )
Jokes apart, the award will certainly help sales of an »outdated« product.
