Simple LAN connection....

Hello,

My configuration is the following :
One 280L tank ^^
One "Heavy PC" connected to my router both pieces being distant from the tank
One laptop (that can be wirelessly connected to my router when I need).

When I use a straight RJ45 cable (no crossover) to connect the PIII to my router (PIII set on fixed IP set to 192.168.1.70) all is fine : I see on my heavy PC the profilux, can connect to the PIII via Profilux controller all is perfect.

BUT when I use a cross over cable to connect directly the PIII to my laptop nothing works : The Laptop cannot connect to the PIII properly (failure to establish fully operationnal connection). The IP assigned to the PIII by the laptop is not the one I fixed in the PIII and ping does not work on the desired address (but it works on the funky adress allocated by the laptop to the PIII that I find doing an IPCONFIG on the laptop...)

(USB connection to the laptop works fine)

I would like to connect directly with my laptop to the PIII through the network cable as it is not possible to durably have a long cable through my flat... and the Laptop would be then connected wirelessly to my router if ever one day I want to open a remote connection to my tank..

Any hint would be welcome !!

I think this is a problem with the IP addresses

IP of ProfiLux and Notebook? Subnetmask?

Hello,

My config is the following :

IP of my Laptop :
192.168.1.1
IP of Heavy PC :
192.168.1.2
Router (default gateway) :
192.168.1.254
Other temporary Laptop :
192.168.1.3
Other temporary Laptop (2) :
192.168.1.4


I have set the SUbnet to 255.255.255.000 in the Profilux IIIex, the IP manually set to 192.168.1.70 the gateway as above.

When I connect it to the heavy PC all is fine (no cross over cable).
When I connect it to the laptop 192.168.1.1 (with a cross over cable) nothing works and the laptop after a long negotiation gives the following IP to the laptop :
169.254.143.127
Subnet : 255.255.0.0
and no default gateway...

Any clue ?

I am afraid I am not an expert , the rest of the set up of the profilux was fine and rather intuitive even for me not being so much into PC but this resists my several attempts !

The funny thing is that even when it works on my Heavy PC it does not show up either on my router connections diagram or on my Ipconfig...

Any hint much appreciated !

I am not expert at all. But once you have your settings right, you need to bridge the connection of your lan, and wireless signal via your network center...

Just highlight the two connections you want to bridge, and right click, bridge connections...

Yes, but before going the bridge and wireless way,
the first step is to be able to connect to the PIII via the RJ45 cable and this very first step does not seem to work for the moment...

If your Laptop's IP changed, then it seems on your Laptop is DHCP enabled. If you connect your Laptop through a cross over cable, there is no DHCP server and it select a ranmom IP. In this case you can't connect.
Check your network settings on your Laptop. In case of cross over connection there must be set a fixed IP.

You were right, I have disabled the DHCP.

But now my Laptop does not connect at all with the PIIIex :
IP is 0.0.0.0
Subnet is 0.0.0.0
Gateway is void

(It still connects wirelessly to the router with the desired static ...1.1 IP)

Only one light is orange at the end of the laptop.
The other one flashes yellow a few times when plugged and then remains out.

Ping on the Laptop to the supposed address of PIII (....1.70) is timed out...

Any idea welcom ^^

If you disable DHCP, you must set up a fixed IP for the wired LAN connection of your Laptop.
This IP should be in the same IP area similar to your ProfiLux...

ProfiLux IP: 192.168.1.70
then your IP should be in the range 192.168.1.1 ... 192.168.1.254

Of course you have to make sure that this IP isn't assigned to another device.

May be there will be a Problem, if you have two network interfaces enabled on your laptop at the same time...

Yes , agreed this is what I have done :
the IP of the laptop is set to 192.168.1.1
the profilux is set to 192.168.1.70

The Laptop is indeed connected via its 2 network cards :
Wireless : IP 192.168.1.1
LAN : 0.0.0.0 But I wish it were 192.168.1.1 also... is there a potential conflict from this ?

yes you can only have one device per IP... use 192.168.1.2 for the next device
