I don't see anything in the manual about ideal height above water line.

The minimum distance between top edge of the aquarium and bottom of the lamp is 20 cm. This is described in the Quick start guide (http://forum.aquariumcomputer.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=10) also linked above, page 4. The table below shows the lightened area for several settings.

The best height for you depends on your tank size and depth, your personal requrements and the ones of your tank. So there is no "ideal heigth, it´s up to you to find an ideal setting for your needs. Only requirement is , as said, the minimum of 20cm above tank.

It maybe going wet by fish splashes or water vapor which may cause moisture and/or salt problems.
But the most important thing is: You lost your warranty.

I have mine 8"above the water line only because my tank is 31 deep and it gave me me PAR
