View Full Version : Profilux Controlled New Build
I shut down my last tank about 5 weeks ago due to several reasons.
Here it is:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/uploader/2013Q1/8277673539_856cfb55a5_b_1.jpg
I ordered a replacement about 5 weeks ago, it arrived a week or so ago. Dimensions - 24x24x18(h), Opti-White, Rimless/Braceless with a L/Hand weir.
I've started the cycle using Dr Tim's and used around 17kg of Aquaroche ceramic pieces.
Current status of the tank:

The main emphasis of the tank will be SPS.
I'll add pics and info as the build progresses...

stunning photos!
Thank you. Photography is another hobby for me. :)
-Aaron- your tank is going to be amazing. I really like your rockwork.
Indeed your pics are spectacular to say the least. Can't wait to watch this tank come to life :)
Thank you Big Al.
I was in 2 frames of mind whether to go with ceramics as a lot of it has the 'cake stand' look, which I'm not a fan of. I have to say the Aquaroche looks nice and to me pretty natural. I can't wait for it to come to life either, I'm gagging to get it cycled. :)

Very nice tank.
Think about putting a cover on the tank...
That jawfish will go tile surfing. Have had THREE of them do that!!!!
Doggydoc
Thanks.
I had the opposite experience with mine. All 3 in together, shared the same burrow together, with an open top tank with zero issues. They were in it for 4 months. IMO what you keep them with and when you add them plays a factor in their fate.
They did have a pecking order though.

Beautiful setup thanks for sharing
Thank you for looking.
Bought a conductivity probe and expansion card at the weekend, got home and tried to calibrate it and realised they gave me 1.41ms fluid, which I believe is for freshwater. So I'm unable to calibrate it currently.
Also, my remaining fish have perished in the holding tank at the shop, not sure why, other than it's not a stable long term environment with all the swings and water being removed and added to their fish system. Bit of a bummer, lesson has been learnt the hard way though.
I've created a stock list for the tank:
Pink Skunk Clowns x 2 (Amphiprion perideraion)
Blue Spot Jawfish (Opistognathus rosenblatti)
M&F Yasha Goby (Stonogobiops yasha)
Splendid Leopard Wrasse (Macropharyngodon bipartitus)
Barnacle Blenny x 5 (Acanthemblemaria macrospilus)
Tanaka's Pygmy Wrasse (Wetmorella tanakai)
My cycle completed last Friday, I have the first additions and signs of life added today. Added some CUC as well and a Porcelain Crab which is doing a good job of evading the camera.

Very nice pics Aaron. You have some major camera skills.
Thanks for sharing :)
Aarron you gave us a nice list of all items for the tank. Now could you give us some insite as to what you use to take the pictures ( I do not believe you are using a smart phone ha ha ha )
Thank you both.
Current set up is Nikon D600 with a Sigma 105mm HSM macro lens. This is used most of the time. Sometimes I use a SB700 as well for fish pics. The light source from above really shows the detail nicely.
That's a sweet set-up you're using Aaron. I would guess you take a LOT of pictures. You have a talent for sure.
Now if we can just convert you over from radion's to GHL Mitras. This would take this tank to the MAX :)
Thanks Al. That may be sooner than you think. Watch this space. ;)
I've had my lighting delivered today, there's a change of plans to my equipment list. I'll get my Mitras 6200HV hung in the next day or so which will replace my Radion as I'm testing the unit.

Aaron that's awesome. I look forward to hearing your first hand input. Be sure to take lots of BEFORE and several progression shots. I think you'll be thoroughly thrilled with your new unit :)
I decided to have a go last night, getting to connect them with the control centre was a total pain. I was up until 1am. Windows 7 doesn't like the drivers as they're not digitally signed. Tried on 2 machines. In the end I had to use my partners laptop with windows 8 to get it working. Long term it needs to work on my machine really. I've set a basic lighting run to tide me over today and I'll play with it more in depth over the weekend. Otherwise I love it. :)
I have the Mitras working fine with Windows 7. Although its the 6100 version so not sure if 6200 has a different driver set. Keep at it, you'll figure it out.

Its win 8 that does not like digitally signed, WIN7 does not have the feature from what I can find. So in theory you should have no trouble connecting with WIN7 but could have issues with WIN8
Interesting Microsoft just announced the replacement to WIN8 but I doubt they will sort out their USB issues.
I'm in the process of installing W7 through Bootcamp to see if that makes any difference. If not I'll try W8 on on my Mac. I had to turn off the digital signing on my partners laptop to get it to work on W8, I was desperate as it was 1am and I had work in the morning and couldn't leave it lol

Thanks, it's a nice crisp blue/white to the eyes. Bootcamp is done and the Mitras connected first time after the drivers installed. Must of been a VMware problem.

Aaron you tank looks AWESOME!
In your opinion how "Accurate" are the pictures to the actual colors you see in your tank? If they are like many "LED pics" the colors are better than the picture depicts.
Congrats on getting everything connected and configured :)

Thanks AL. I've dialed in a tiny bit more blue in the last few days, I shoot in RAW and adjust the WB to what my eyes see. The macros of the corals are pretty accurate. The monti top back is brown, I got it very cheap and I'm taking a chance on it colouring up. It's started to lighten. I've added more corals over the weekend and a 3 channel slave GHL doser.
Thanks for the details Aaron.
What are you planning to dose with your new GHL doser?
I've taken my Kamoer offline and I'm using it to dose alkalinity and calcium on two of the channels and chelated iron on the 3rd, just a couple of mls a day. I tend to leave magnesium alone as I'm doing weekly water changes. I'm waiting on the new breeze to be released and that will be the next bit of equipment I buy. My supplier said end of May it's coming.
Some pics.

Not entirely sure, I know they're regarded as tricky long term but I seem to do OK with them. I had 4 in my last tank, one was the size of a large melon which the clownfish used as a home.

I sold the others when I broke down the tank in January, the red one I bought in May last year so I've had it 12 months.
I've read some stuff that chelated iron plays some success in keeping them alive, I've pretty much always used iron as a supplement.
Aaron you definitely have a "gift" with reefing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and your pictures.
That's very kind Al, thank you.
If you want to see a gifted individual check out rattters tank in this section (further down), he is truly gifted when it comes to running a tank and growing corals. Inspirational and the drive for me to focus on SPS corals.

Gorgeous tank.
Thanks everyone.
I must say, I'm smitten with the Mitras, I'm starting to get some good growth on some corals. I've added more corals recently as well so hopefully once they settle they'll follow the footsteps of the others.
Now the warmer weather is here I've got a 3 fan breeze on order.
Currently where I'm at, suffering with diatoms over the sand bed. I put it down to the pistol shrimp, doesn't stop digging!

Coming along nicely! Have you noticed any significant colour improvements in your SPS with the Mitras? I had some fags I pick up cheaply a few months back which were either brown or badly bleached and are now starting to get their florescence back.
On the whole I've seen much improvement on the corals that were originally in the tank when I switched the lighting over, apart from one which doesn't want to colour up. It was the same under the Radion, it's a green Digi. I can't understand why, I've got Acropora basing out and growing but this one frag refuses to do anything lol. It has growth tips, just no colour.
Everything looks so much cooler top down.

THings are ticking over nicely, had to turn the Mitras back down to 60% as they started bleaching an Acro and my plating Monti. An acclamation program would be a welcome addition as it appears I cranked them too quickly. Some pics.

Thank you. Project can be downloaded here. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/fgy9f8691sfn5wn/Mitras%206200.lpc)
Not updated for a while, I had a few issues with the tank. SPS were pale and some browned out. I've put this down to Bio Pearls stripping out too much, my NO3 was never detectable. Also I weren't running the Mitras hard enough, a few corals browned out which is either not enough light or high nutrients. As my nutrients are low it had to be lighting. Things are slowly improving. I've made changes to my lighting program. The corals get a 3 hour 10k blast at 100% when the main photoperiod starts in high output.
I'm not out of the woods, however I'm seeing improvements from this time last month.
New light schedule is here. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/fgy9f8691sfn5wn/Mitras%206200.lpc)

What mode are you running your Mitras in? High Efficiency or High Output? And what is your current percentage intensity in Energy Options?
Thanks!

I might crank my up. I have the 6100 running over my 24x24x24 60 gallon cube and I am running %100 in High Efficiency mode. I also run 4 T5. 2 gieseman pure actinic and 2 ATI blue+. I just switched over to this tank. Everything was under the Mitras before, but it was on a much smaller tank and was at 65% HE. Decisions....
Don
I'm sure if you do it slowly things will be fine, mine was at 80% high efficiency but I was having issues with colours on some corals so I just cranked it up over a few weeks, nothing suffered and things look the best they have to date.
Tank is continuing to improve. Here's a comparison between september and december.
