View Full Version : Current status of the GHL-ProfiLux-App

GHL Support
27.12.2012, 12:40
Here the English version of Matthias' post in the German part of the forum:

I’d like to answer here the questions that are frequently asked regarding our ProfiLux-App:

When will the App be available for everybody?
In a few days – if everything will run smoothly then for Android still in 2012. The Beta-tests are running, presently we are still working on bugs and the optimization of the performance.
I’d have liked to publish the App as "Christmas present", but this couldn’t be achieved in time. The effort was – like so often – far more extensive as expected.
For Apple it will take a bit longer, they like to test and release each App.

How much will the App cost?
GHL will offer the App free of charge!

With which ProfiLux model can the App be used?
With all ProfiLux that have a LAN-interface integrated, so presently ProfiLux 3 (eX) and ProfiLux 3.1N (ex)

With how many ProfiLux can I use the App?
You can define as many connections as you like.

Will measurement data be displayed?
Yes, furthermore the measurement data in the App will be stored in a data base, therefore longterm recordings are possible.

For which smartphones will the App be available?
The App is presently almost ready for Android and iPhone. We check if the App is also possible for Windows 8.

I hope I have answered the most important questions – if not: Then please ask here.

Aaron I don't think the iOS Beta has started yet. I think right now they are still working out the bugs in the Android OS and then migrating over to the iOS platform from there.

Iv asked Matthias to be a tester however my PM's seem to be just ignored.
Hopefully he isnt doing it intentially, that would be disappointing.

we never ignore PMs intentially - if a reply is delayed it is just because we had no chance to reply yet - I am checking my PMs now

Hello BigShow.

Sorry for the delay but I can assure you it's not forgotten or just dragging along. The BETA testers are currently testing it thoroughly so that the end result is as solid and dependable as we've all come to expect from anything else from GHL.

Well it is dragging along, considering we were told by Mathias himself that it would be available before 2013. I really hope when this app does come out that there is ABSOLUTELY no bugs with it, because I will be extremely pissed off.

The beta test is running, so some people already have the app (me2)

Keep on dreaming. It´s a matter of fact that there is no [and yes, "no" means really "not even one"] software without bugs, especially if it´s brand new like this app.

Oh I will keep on dreaming....I have been dreaming of a GHL app for over 2 years now.

How long have "we" been BETA testing the app? How much longer are "we" going to be BETA testing the app. I thought the point of the BETA test wast to eliminate bugs. I assumed all the extensive testing was so GHL can deliver a...

LOL....ok Wirus.

Thanks for the "valued" input

Can anyone else actually answer the questions I asked?

How long have "we" been BETA testing the app? How much longer are "we" going to be BETA testing the app?

BigAl07

BigShow,

I hope you've not taken offense to my "attempt" to offer some input. I'm not speaking for GHL in regards to details etc but was trying to let you know that the "testing" is still currently proceeding. I figured that some information offering reassurance that work is still being done on the project would be better than hearing nothing at all.

There have been some bugs in the AP but they are being addressed and eliminated quickly. I can assure you that if you would have gotten the AP before now you would be much more "pissed off" than you are right now. Trust me when I say NO Ap is better than an AP full of bugs and unable to work as expected.

Hopefully the rest of the bugs can be ironed out quickly and a stable Droid Ap released shortly.

BIGSHOW
24.01.2013, 14:32
Not at all BigAl.

I respect what you have to say and I do appreciate you sharing more information on where exactly that App is at. I understand bugs will be an issue (I run the current App designed by you know who...lol)

All I wanted is some kind of update and "lose" timeline on when the product will be delivered.

Cheers.

I think the answer to all this is simple. Mattias seems to like announcing things WAY before they are ready and has yet to make any of the "estimates" ever given (case in point the new Web Server).

I know software development takes time and that it is extremely complicated and i think Mattias and his team are doing a good job, BUT it might be best in terms of customer satisfaction to not announce things before they are actually ready to be released.

It terms of web/app software why not get a professional team to do it, I sure most will pay for it.
These days most of us want a decent app/web server so we can play and have full control when we are away from our tanks, looking at the Apex/ Aquatronica , they seems to be light years ahead in software development.

Totally true.....if you don't promise anything then nobody can complain. So only announce a release period or date or new functionality when you are 99% sure that you are gonna honor that promise. This way the complaining will stay down to a minimum.

I solely bought my Touch on the promises of new functionality that we still don't have, so yes.... this feels like I am being lied to and just as in my personal life this is something I take a bit personal.

For the record I think that GHL is still a good company with good products.

For now we just have to see when the APP will be released.................

<rant> I disagree, but whatever way you look at it people will complain. It was good enough of the GHL team to tell us that they are working on it and its something to look forward to. I wonder how much time they have spent over the years replying to threads like this instead of concentrating on coding/testing. :) Considering they are in the BETA stages now, it shouldn't be too much longer. And you cant compare a GHL Profilux to any other aquarium computer on the market. Ok, some might have a nice web interface at present, but seriously, can they do half of what a Profilux can? </rant> :p

I do agree.
I am in the group of the eagerly awaiting for THE app.... But I guess I have to sit and wait patiently until it comes out. I do know that when it comes out, like any other GHL product out there, I should be very happy.
I guess what I am trying to say is that I am ok with the wait....
Maybe before MACNA 2013.

Actually no its completely way off the mark, since when did apex have a dedicated doser that allowed you to dose in ML or a flow sensor that did not require some coded open source re work? Aquatronica have not released a new accessory for years.

Ok some important facts before this thread gets closed for becoming overheated.

1. GHL are using a professional team
2. OTHER controller manufacturers rely heavily on user open source for APPS, this leads to multiple issues and unreliability. GHL is sold to you as a product you can rely on, I think everyone here would be pretty mad if an APP was hashed out only to go belly up on you.
3. The GHL (opposite to what was posted here) is THE most functional controller on the market, not one single other controller offers the amount of hardware functions that the ProfiLux does, the down side to the APP fans out here is that everyone will want something different from that product suite to control, and for an APP that is not easy, it takes time, effort and a lot of resources to get it right.

I have played with the other controller APPS and they are little more than fancy graphing tools and the ability to turn a plug socket on and off. GHL is way more advanced than that.

We can scream as much as we like about the APP not coming but when it comes it will come and it will be as with everything else with GHL. top notch. Until then maybe forget about it enjoy your GHL immense relaibility where you dont have to worry about keep on checking into it, and be amazed when one day you see it is available. Thats what I am doing ;)

On side note we have clients running native software on their Tablets with Win8 works great. who needs an app ;)

In closing - I know a few are ********** by this, but continually posting "flaming comments" will not bring it faster, I just hope these voices also listen to the genuine answers that you will get what you want and just because product X has one before product Y does not make product X's any better. GHL will deliver, never failed anyone yet.

Sweet, I will take that humiliation for an app any day ;)

Look, all I was asking for was a little more transparency in what is/was going on with App. Even a simple post on a weekly basis saying something along the lines of "still beta testing, working out the bugs, another update in a weeks time" Or better yet.. a post with examples of some bugs that were occurring and being worked out...that would of been great as well.

In defense of GHL this app WAS ALREADY created by a third party. It has/had a number of issues and the developer has since abandoned the app.

I still use it, however, I can't shut off sockets due to to a number of GHL FW updates, but I can still view my data and graphs of water parameters. I can see all my sockets, I just can't shut them on/off.

That's pretty wild you're still running the "other" Ap. Mine stopped working a good while back so I was really lost. I kind of got spoiled with the remote monitoring ability even as limited as it was. Actually mine had a bug in it that would turn on my ALARM for temp every time the heater kicked on LOL! Of course it only started doing that when I was on vacation in another COUNTRY for 7 days LOL!

The GHL ap should be as robust and dependable as the rest of their products so it should be something well worth the wait and anticipation :)

Allen actually highlights a good point here.

Apps that the manufacturer has no control over the quality of can prove fatal to a tank. This is why GHL are taking their time. I would rather wait another 6 months for a reliable APP than have one kill my tank!

BigAl07
29.01.2013, 19:32
Another point is in the FW updates. The 3rd party aps had to be re-written or at least "Tweaked" with many of the new FW updates. In fact this is one of the main reasons why MrProfiLux went to the way-side. One of the safety checks in a recent FW update rendered the ap pretty much nonfunctional.

At least with GHL providing the AP they have inside information on upcoming changes to the FW and can tweak the ap (and test it) accordingly.

It's half March and no more news :(

I can agree with some opinions here that is better to announce some new product when you are sure
that you can release in time, this is a proof of professionalism. Is a little bit late for me to switch to
other controller on the market, and I don't want to do that, I already have 3 Profilux, but I am
disappointed that we are waiting this application for more then 3 years now.

I hear you. Hey I was right there waiting alongside for 3 years.
People here know how I feel about GHL and their practices, but give them credit where credit is due...
The app is NOT PERFECT, but for a first run app, I am very happy with the results so far.
I was able to connect FIRST time, and have not had any issues.
It needs some "grooming" here and there but overall I am pleased.

I am also giving credit to GHL, otherwise I would not have bought 3 controllers :)
I was not been able to connect at the first run, maybe I will need to update my
firmware version on controllers.
I am not expecting to be a perfect application, at least now we have something.
