Variable illumination

Hi Guys

I do not understand the variable illumination settings.
Do I need to have 1-10v interface and dimable lights?

I currently have my T5 on Illumination 1
My MH on Illumination 2 for week days and Illumination 3 for weekends.

I have setup Variable Illumination 1 for mon - friday on 2 and sat - sun on 3.
This is where I am not sure how to continue.

I did go into the 1-10 interface and set 1 on Variable Illumination 1.
